Supportive Care

Throughout your AML treatment, you will be offered supportive care. This type of treatment is not given to treat your disease as such, but to help you to manage the symptoms and side effects that can occur with AML and its treatment.

For patients with AML, some common symptoms include low blood counts, including anaemia; infection; tumour lysis syndrome, caused by breakdown of tumor cells in the body; and kidney stones. Side effects of therapy may include mouth ulcers, diarrhea, rashes, fatigue, temporary hair loss, and nausea and vomiting.

Supportive care varies from patient to patient, but may include medication, blood product transfusion, nutritional changes, relaxation techniques, and emotional support, among others.
