Heidi Cascarano was diagnosed with polycythemia vera (PV) in 2008 at the age of 40 through a routine physical. At the time, Heidi had symptoms that she did not realize were related, such as discomfort in her abdomen, itching, dry skin and fatigue. After seeing a few different hematologists, she did her own research, educated herself and sought out an MPN specialist. When she started seeing Dr. Brady Stein, it was discovered that she had progressed to myelofibrosis (MF). Heidi is very proactive and worked closely with her doctor to refine her current treatment regimen. She experiences no side effects and sees Dr. Stein every 3 to 4 months, with more frequent blood work sent to him regularly. Heidi’s advice to others is to seek out an expert, to join online support groups, and to educate yourself about your condition using many different resources.
