Dr. Januario Castro is an associate professor of medicine at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, division of bone marrow and stem cell transplant. Dr. Castro was awarded a K08 grant to work under the mentorship of Dr. Thomas Kipps at UC San Diego, which allowed him to successfully obtain funding as independent investigator (R01) to continue work in gene immunotherapy applied to chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and Non Hodgkin-Lymphoma (NHL). He is a co-investigator of the P01 grant that supports the CLL Research Consortium, a Consortium composed of “Who’s Who" CLL investigators in the United States. In addition, Dr. Castro is the principal investigator of grants and clinical trials, including gene immunotherapy applied to CLL and NHL. His area of expertise is translational research & early therapy development applied to leukemia and lymphoma with emphasis in cellular- stem cell therapy and gene immunotherapy. Dr. Castro is an active member of several academic and biotechnology organizations, including the American Society of Hematology and American Society of Clinical Oncology Scientific Review Committee, the NCI’s Leukemia Steering Committee (LKSC) and advisory boards of different biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.
