Karen was diagnosed with myelofibrosis (MF) in November of 2007 at the age of 53 after experiencing vertigo. She was referred to Dr. Srdan Verstovsek at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. For the first five years after her diagnosis, she was on the same treatment and later entered a clinical trial. She is now being treated with one of the medicines from her clinical trial and has been doing very well. Karen notes that she is tired from time to time and bruises easily but takes breaks to cope. She lives on over 100 acres with her husband, Buck, and enjoys staying active, hunting, fishing and crafting. She has two children and 11 grandchildren. Karen’s advice for those that are newly diagnosed "Be hopeful. Be thankful for every day and live life to the fullest."
