Are you afraid that seeking a second opinion for your lung cancer will offend your oncologist? Dr Frank Griesinger, Head of Clinical Oncology at Pius-Hospital, Cancer Center Coordinator (Oldenburg, Germany), believes that patients with a serious condition should seek a second opinion.

This interview was recorded at the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) congress held in Madrid (September 2017). Lung cancer videos recorded at ESMO 17 are part of an educational program by the Patient Empowerment Foundation (PEF). We thank AstraZeneca for their support.

Dr. Griesinger:

I think that every patient has the right to get a second opinion.  I think it's crucial that if you have a lung cancer patient that normally there's the time to get a second opinion.  Now, if you—if there's a lot of confidence in the doctor that is treating you, you don't—not everybody needs a second opinion and especially if the doctor really abides by the recommendations that are currently available, that are currently active, then, of course, I think the patient, the respective patient is in good hands.  But, again, every patient has the right for a second opinion, and I think patients should ask for that if they are unsure whether the recommendations the treating doctor gives them are really good for them.
